I don't know about you, but throughout my sophomore years, I made myself a bunch of mix-tapes. Well, not exactly mix-tapes because they were in the form of CDs (read: Compact Discs), but I figured they're similar in meaning and 'mix-tapes' sounds cooler.
This was before the age of built-in bluetooth and AUX cable. They were not the necessity when you looked for cars or cellphones, so burning your MP3 files onto the CDs was the coolest thing we could do. Unfortunately, these Compact Discs have limited storage capability. Back then, they only went up to around 50 or 60 MB (correct me if I'm wrong), and that only allowed you to burn some 12-15 songs depending on the quality of the file and the length of the songs. With this being the situation I'd been in, I ended up owning hundreds of CDs full of random playlists.
Then people got creative. We started to send messages to people with mix-tapes. For example, if you were to have a crush on someone, you would give them a CD filled with romantic songs. Or, if you had had downloaded some new songs that your friends have yet to have, you would 'burn' the songs and give them the CD filled with new songs as a friendship gesture. It was fun.
Nowadays, mix-tapes are replaced by playlists. Digital playlist is all over the place. If you open iTunes and browse their music, you would be bombarded by a bunch of different playlists, i.e. Trending This Week, New Music, etc. My point is, I'm going to give you my mix-tape/playlist for the first quarter of 2017. A lot has happened and I think music has its own way to describe my life story to you. It also serves very well as a reminder to self because music gives nostalgic elements to our memory. Sorry to spam your feed like this, but I hope you enjoy my mix-tape!
She Knows - J.Cole
"Got me up so high. Tryna get a piece at that apple pie. I be up so high. Tryna get a piece at that apple pie."
I don't agree with the rest of the lyrics, but this piece right here gave me motivation for work. Apple pie symbolizes the American Dream - hopes and dreams and ambitions. Hope this got you high and be eatin' that apple pie. Also, the beat is sick.
Starboy - The Weeknd
Pretty much the whole thing is love. This song is kind of an alter ego. Money, power and glory gives you a certain high that's hard to come down from. This song hit bull's eye because I had some people "tryna test" my family. Funny. When you see your loved ones hurt, your brain and heart might be capable of some things you wouldn't dare think before. Take this with a grain of salt. It's okay to feel, but is it necessary to act on your feelings? Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. For example, vengeance. Loud exhale. Breathe in. Breathe out. Forgiveness. Chanting meditation. Ommmmmm.
Prblms - 6lack.
"I wanted a bish who is down to earth, but she want the boddamn sky." Is it wrong to want the sky? Although, let's also be grateful that we even got the grounds at all.
I Try - Jasmine Thompson
"I play it off but I'm dreaming of you. I keep my cool but I'm feeling. Tried to say goodbye and I choked. Tried to walk away and I stumbled. Though I tried to hide it, my world crumbles when you're not near."
I swear to heavens I wasn't feeling blue, but her voice! Her voice made me think of the nasty breakup moments.
Papercuts - Illy
"But I'd rather war with you all of summer than a low key peace with another, ayy." Relationship goals? Passion, my love. Passionate love.
Scars to Your Beautiful - Alessia Cara
"She just wants to be beautiful. She goes unnoticed. She knows no limits. She craves attention. She praises an image. She prays to be sculpted by the Sculptor. There's a hope that's waiting in the dark. You should know you're beautiful just the way you are. And you don't have to change a thing, the world can change its heart. No scars to your beautiful. We're stars and we're beautiful." 'Nuff said.
Berlari Tanpa Kaki - Gamaliel Audrey Cantika
"Tegar. Ku 'kan mencoba melewatinya. Lepas, lepaskan semua yang sudah berlalu. Tapi, tanpa dirimu tak mungkin, ku terus berlari tanpa kaki."
One of the best movies I've watched. If you haven't watched it, you should. Indonesian talents at its best. Also, GAC (Gamaliel Audrey Cantika) is also one of the best Indonesian musical group. Trust me on this.
Something Just Like This - Coldplay
Pretty much the entire thing too. Coldplay is a genius, we all know that.
"I've been reading books of old. The legends and the myths. Achilles and his gold. Hercules and his gifts. Spiderman's control and Batman with his fists. And clearly I don't see myself upon that list. She said "Where'd you wanna go? How much you wanna risk? I'm not looking for somebody with some superhuman gifts. Some superhero. Some fairytale bliss. Just something I can turn to. Somebody I can kiss. I want something just like this."
Have a great year, everyone!
