10 Songs to Kick-Start the Year

Published on 06 Jan 2016 / by: Mel

"2016 will be littered with tropical house. And classic house is making a comeback, flavored with sounds from trop/deep house.", says a friend of mine, whose taste in music is rather vast and...anti-mainstream. Don't get me wrong, I am as mainstream as one can get, but in order to provide diversity into this list we're making, I have to ask for opinions from the pro. At the end, my aim is to give you a list which has both great musicalities and deep lyrical impressions. So, here goes!

1. Dumblonde - White Lightning

"You and me, ultra fly. King and Queen, glorify...Ruler of the Sky...Immortality." Seriously, we really are. Set your mind and get your attitude right this year. Check out the rest of their songs, "You Got Me" and "Love Blind"; they will grow on you like lush grasses on streams of water.

2. Demi Lovato - Cool for the Summer

"Don't tell your mother. Kiss one another. Die for each other. We're cool for the summer." Ha! Like, what could possibly go wrong when you live by these words?! Whilst you check everything on your to-do lists, be sure to live in the moment! ......take this with a grain of salt, though.

3. Jason Mraz - The Woman I love

"Sometimes the world can make you feel. You're not welcome anymore. And you beat yourself up. You let yourself get mad. And in those times when you stop lovin'. The woman I adore. You can relax. Because, babe, I got your back. Mm, I got you." Relationship goals. Don't mind his hair.

4. Justin Bieber - Love Yourself

"Cause if you like the way you look that much. Oh, baby, you should go and love yourself. And if you think that I'm still holdin' on to somethin'. You should go and love yourself." It is okay to be passive agressive once in a while. Get on with your life.

5. Darius - Helios

I have nothing to say about its short and repetitive lyrics, but for some reasons, they compliment the song beautifully. This is a great song for when you're just cruising down the freeway or just chilling out.

6. G-Eazy X Bebe Rexha - Me, Myself & I

"This shit is lovely, this shit ain't random. I didn't get lucky. Made it right here 'cause I'm sick with it, Cuddy. They all take money for granted, but don't want to work for it. Tell me now, isn't it funny?" Self-reminder. Nothing good comes easy.

7. Kygo - Firestone

"Our hearts are like firestones. And when they strike, we feel the love. Sparks will fly, they ignite our bones. We light up the world." My personal favorite! Follow your hearts and light up this world.

8. Rossa ft. Afghan - Kamu Yang Ku Tunggu

"Segala kekurangan, semua kelemahan, kau jadikan cinta...tak'kan cemas, ku percaya kamu karena kau jaga tulus cintamu." Rossa and Afgan are two of the few good Indonesian singers we have. Their skills are shown with perfect harmony in this duet. The sincerity of love, perfectly delivered.

9. RAN - Dekat di Hati

"Meski kau kini jauh di sana. Kita memandang langit yang sama. Jauh di mata namun kau dekat di hati. Jarak dan waktu takkan berarti. Karena kau akan selalu di hati. Bagai detak jantung yang kubawa kemanapun kupergi." There's something soothing about their voices, and for those of you who are in a long distance relationship, I hope this song cheer you on and warm your hearts.

10. Calvin Harris + Disciples - How Deep is Your Love

"I want you to breathe me. Let me be your air. Let me roam your body freely...Let me in on all your secrets. No inhibitions. No sin." I believe in love and what it is capable of, be it explained as an adjective, a noun, or a verb. Love! (Also, Gigi looks flawless in this video...)

11. Amanda Cook - Mercy

"Oh, Love, great Love. Fear can not be found in You. There will never be a day that you're uncertain of the ones you choose. You delight in showing mercy, and mercy triumphs over judgement." Lastly, with everything that is happening around the world, where harsh judgments are thrown at and by us, it becomes easy to shut the front door and harden our hearts. I know this song is not secular and might be a little bias, but receiving a little mercy comes a long way.

Okay, I know they're eleven, but it's close to impossible to just narrow them down to ten! Thank you to all my sources for kindly giving me their top three song recommendations! Share your top three with us, below!
